Social Responsibility

We believe in the Stena way, that’s why we act within our values, showing respect for the environment and the communities in which we work.

With a continuous aim of creating further shared opportunities, all of our current Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives can be seen below:

Stena Drilling supports the local community, with ventures such as the Stena 10k run, donations to the Young Carers Project and both local and national charities.

We also have a view to international sustainability and development, and support stakeholders across all regions of our operations, with a specific emphasis on community initiatives and educational projects.

Rumolemini School Redevelopment

Stena Drilling invested in the now completed redevelopment of a school in Rumolemini, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. We wanted to not only improve facilities but also create an enjoyable environment for the 1,800 students attending, allowing them to get the best out of the learning opportunities at their disposal.

During the renovation we began by installing a drainage system, before digging out the underneath of the existing building and filling it with concrete, creating a strong, safe and reliable foundation for learning.

We then went on to create a main classroom block, new Principal’s offices, an administration and ablution block, provided new roofing sheets and ventilation as well as conducting repairs and maintenance to the remainder of the building.

Memorial University in St John’s Canada

Stena Drilling made a $20,000 donation to St John’s Canada Memorial University, a charitable fund established to provide University education for the children of the oil workers who perished in the Flight 491 helicopter crash.

We received a letter of thanks from the University, stating, “the fund will allow future generations of students at Memorial University, the Marine Institute and the College of the North Atlantic to keep the memory, spirit and courage of those who lost their lives on that fateful March day alive.”

IKO Water Project

In 2007, we undertook the drilling of a borehole and supply pump to enable the IKO clan, as part of the local community in Eastern Obolo, Nigeria to obtain clean, safe drinking water.

Admiral Makarov Naval Academy

In 2009, after previously sponsoring the Makarov Navel Academy’s training ship MIR in St Petersburg, Russia, we came to identify the potential and overall calibre of the cadets within the Academy.

With a view to creating a pool of global talent, Stena Drilling set up a training programme for selected graduate cadets. The course content is continuously reviewed in order to ensure only the highest standard of training/safety awareness is passed on to cadets, preparing them for the environment and conditions they face.

Philippines Natural Disaster Support

Stena has a large contingent of Filipino employees across its worldwide fleet of vessels and has provided financial aid and practical support to employees and their families during times of great hardship and natural disasters

Angola Maritime Training Centre

The development of a maritime training centre in Angola has strengthened Stena’s commitment to training and developing local workers in Angola

Ghana Orphanage

We provided financial assistance for the construction of an orphanage, together with regular donations of toys and clothes for the local children
